Dallas has some of the most varied housing in Texas. There are 1910s–30s Craftsman and Tudor homes in the M Streets, Lakewood and Kessler Park, mid-century ranches in Lake Highlands and Preston Hollow, and newer infill townhomes across Uptown and Oak Lawn.
Permits in Dallas
The City of Dallas Development Services department issues permits through the DallasNow online system and the Permit Center at the Oak Cliff Municipal Center. District offices can issue some permits, including single-family re-roofs and foundation repair. Re-roofs over $500, structural work, and plumbing, electrical and mechanical work need permits. Nonstructural interior remodeling that doesn't add floor area or change exterior doors or windows does not.
Historic and conservation districts
Dallas has many historic districts and conservation districts, each with its own standards. In those areas even siding, windows, fences and roofing can require review before work begins. Check your address on the city's map before you sign a contract.
