Most DFW homes have asphalt shingle roofs, and many have been replaced more than once because of hail. A typical replacement means tearing off to the deck, replacing damaged decking, installing new underlayment, drip edge, flashing and vents, and then the shingles. Many homeowners now upgrade to UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistant shingles to reduce future damage and, often, to get an insurance discount.
What roof replacement & hail repair typically costs in DFW
| Scope | Typical range (estimate) | What that usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| Architectural shingle (25 squares) | $10,500 – $17,500 | Tear-off, decking allowance, synthetic underlayment, architectural shingle |
| Class 4 impact-resistant (25 squares) | $13,000 – $21,000 | Class 4 impact-rated shingle; check your insurer's discount |
| Standing-seam metal (25 squares) | $23,000 – $39,500 | Standing-seam metal; very hail-resistant but dents cosmetically |
| Repair (a few damaged areas) | $400 – $1,500 | Replace damaged shingles, pipe boots, flashing |

Permits
The City of Dallas requires a re-roof permit for single-family homes unless the work is valued at $500 or less. Re-roof permits can be issued through the DallasNow online system, the Permit Center at Oak Cliff Municipal Center, or district offices. Dallas also requires proof that roofing debris went to a city landfill or transfer station before the final inspection. Fort Worth and most suburbs require re-roof permits too, with different fees and inspection steps, and your roofer should pull it.
Insurance claims without the headaches
- Photograph the damage and call your insurer. A roofer can attend the adjuster inspection.
- Read your policy for a percentage wind/hail deductible and whether the roof is covered at actual cash value (ACV) or replacement cost.
- Texas law prohibits contractors from waiving or paying your deductible, and contracts funded by insurance must include specific consumer notices. Walk away from anyone who promises a "free roof."
- Get the scope in writing: decking, ventilation, drip edge, and code-required items.
Storm-chaser red flags
- No local address or Texas references
- Pressure to sign a contract or assignment of benefits on the spot
- Asking for full payment before work starts

Roof Replacement & Hail Repair: common questions
How long does a DFW roof replacement take?
The tear-off and install on a typical home takes one to two days. Scheduling after a big hail event can stretch to weeks.
Will Class 4 shingles survive any hailstorm?
No roof is hail-proof. Class 4 shingles pass a standardized steel-ball impact test, which improves resistance, but very large hail can still damage them.
