DFW summers are long and humid, and winters bring a few hard freezes. Most homes have a split AC with a gas furnace. Heat pumps are increasingly common, especially in all-electric newer homes. Two-story homes often have two systems, or one system with zoning, and the upstairs system works hardest.

Planning estimates for typical projects, not quotes. Your bids will depend on size, condition, materials and permit requirements.
Licensing and permits
HVAC contractors in Texas must hold an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor license from TDLR. Ask for the number and look it up. Most DFW cities require a mechanical permit for replacement. Your contractor should pull it and schedule the inspection.
Sizing and ducts
Ask for a load calculation, not just a same-tonnage swap, and have the ducts in the attic checked for leaks and crushed runs. Fixing ducts can improve comfort as much as new equipment.
